For a long time, willpower was thought of as a fixed quality: either you had plenty of it or you did not. Recent research, however, has completely 1______ this idea on its head, with important 2______ for anyone trying to change their behaviour. Scientists now compare self-control to a muscle rather than a permanent character trait.
Like a muscle, willpower can become tired. Studies suggest that after resisting one temptation, people find it much harder to 3______ a second one shortly afterwards. This phenomenon, sometimes 4______ to as 'ego depletion', explains why we are most likely to give 5______ our good intentions late in the day, when our mental energy is running low.
The encouraging news is that willpower can also be strengthened. Just as regular exercise 6______ up physical strength, practising small acts of self-discipline improves our overall self-control. Experts also 7______ out that resisting temptation is far easier when we are well rested. Rather than blaming ourselves for weak character, then, we would do better to 8______ care of the basic conditions that make self-control possible.
"Turned this idea on its head", no "put". "Referred to as", no "called to as".
Colocaciones (make/do/take + sustantivo), phrasal verbs, preposiciones dependientes (interested in, rely on) y conectores.
