For questions 1-8, read the text below and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each gap.
For most of human history, the night sky was a 1______ of wonder, its countless stars visible to the naked eye. Today, however, the majority of people live under skies so 2______ with artificial light that the Milky Way has vanished from view altogether.
This phenomenon, known as light pollution, has crept up on us almost 3______. Each new street lamp and floodlit car park seems harmless in 4______, yet their combined glow now blots out all but the very brightest stars above our cities.
The consequences 5______ far beyond a diminished view. Nocturnal animals, whose behaviour is finely 6______ to natural cycles of light and dark, are thrown into disarray. Migrating birds lose their bearings, and newly hatched turtles crawl inland instead of towards the sea.
Fortunately, light pollution is among the easiest environmental problems to 7______. Shielded lamps, motion sensors and a simple willingness to switch off unnecessary lighting can restore the darkness at little cost. All that is really 8______ is the will to act.
Primera tarea del Reading and Use of English del C1.
Preguntas frecuentes
Leyendo prensa en inglés y apuntando grupos enteros ("cast doubt on", "all but impossible"), no palabras sueltas.
