For questions 1-8, read the text below. Use the word given in capitals at the end of some of the lines to form a word that fits in the gap in the same line.
The placebo effect remains one of the most 1(INTRIGUE) phenomena in modern medicine. Patients given an inert pill frequently report a genuine 2(IMPROVE) in their symptoms, apparently through the power of expectation alone.
Researchers have long been 3(PUZZLE) by the way in which belief can trigger measurable physiological change. Brain-imaging studies reveal that the mere 4(ANTICIPATE) of relief can prompt the body to release its own natural painkillers.
The implications are far-reaching. If a patient's state of mind can accelerate their 5(RECOVER), then the 6(INTERACT) between psychology and physiology is far more intimate than was once supposed.
Deliberately prescribing dummy pills does, of course, raise thorny 7(ETHIC) questions about honesty and consent. Yet whatever one's view, the reality of the phenomenon is now all but 8(DENY): expectation, it seems, can be a medicine in its own right.
